The news that everyone has been waiting for is finally here! On the 24th of September, Bioware finally announced (after months and months of anticipation) the release date for Star Wars the Old republic. The launch date is planned to be December 20th, 2011 in America, and December 24th, 2011 in Europe!

This is awesome news for everyone who is a fan of Bioware. Those who have been following this game since its inception have been waiting for the release date to come. Many people have grown impatient with Bioware and the lack of a release date for so long, but all those who have been negative and impatient can finally relax!

So for you gamers out there, keep playing whatever game you are currently playing to hold you over until December!

Along with the release date announcement, they also released the subscription details. It is the normal monthly subscription model used by most MMO’s, with bulk buying deals (IE paying for 3 months in advance is less than paying a month at a time). The details on the official release announcement is as follows:

Each copy of Star Wars: The Old Republic will come with 30 days of subscription time, after which you have the option to continue playing with one of the following monthly subscription fees:

  • 1 Month Subscription: $14.99 (£8.99/€12.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription: $13.99 per month (one-time charge of $41.97/£25.17/€35.97)
  • 6 Month Subscription: $12.99 per month (one-time charge of $77.94/£46.14/€65.94)
Personally, I think this is great news for gamers. There was some speculation on the forums that they may use a Free to Play model (similar to Lord of the Rings Online), which many gamers (including me) are strongly against (at least for MMO’s). Not to say that Free to Play MMO’s are inherently bad, but usually they end up selling power for money. Regardless of anyones feelings on the free to play model, i’m sure everyone is excited to finally have a date.

PS. Preorders are still available! If you preorder, you may get early access to the game, as evidence by the following from the news article:

EDIT: EA has also confirmed that SWTOR will not be released in Australia as of right now. I don’t imagine that this game will never be released there, but there is no planned release date as of right now.

Not very demanding as most people suspected. This is certainly great news for me as well as many others who haven’t had the means to get a new gaming rig for this game!

This video, released thursday, is a Q&A session at the Bioware base in Comic Con discusses some very interesting information. View the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChrqpYv1wqM

Some information of note:

  • Exclusive Collector Edition shop announced; items in the “lounge” will not give players any advantages to power in-game; some cosmetic, some weapons and armor. Also similar items will be available to ALL players through other means in-game but with different looks.
  • Cosmetic modification to weapons has been confirmed. Similarly the color stone you will receive through the pre-order bonus will be “gold” and add certain effects to your weapon as well as just modifying the color.
  • Sharding technology (multiple instances of a zone) has been confirmed to be in-game, however they assure us it will only be used very “sparingly”. Upon the initial release they may use it to ensure server stability due to the large number of players logging on, but then after the population stabilizes they will try to use it less and less often or remove it entirely.
  • Advanced Class re-speccing is confirmed to be in-game for launch. It will be free the first time you do it, then it will become more and more “expensive” and “difficult”.
  • Due to overwhelming feedback received in response to the current speeders we have seen in-game, Bioware has decided to totally re-tool their entire philosophy in regards to mounts. Instead of having a system where players start with slower, less attractive speeders that “do not look great” and then “upgrade” them, NOW they are remodeling speeders so they are all aesthetically more pleasing to the player-base as a whole.
  • An unannounced feature will unlock new races and species to players. This is speculated to be the “Legacy” system in SWTOR.
  • Each class will have approximately 30 abilities at level 50.
  • Ship interior customization is currently being planned for the future, but WILL NOT be in-game at launch.
  • Titles will be in-game and very plentiful and are totally cosmetic.
  • There are no currently plans for a Mac client, however Bioware confirms that SWTOR “runs great” in Bootcamp.
Some great information in this Q&A and I suggest everyone give it a watch!

Now this news may have some serious implications. As anyone who has been following this game knows, Bioware has been very secretive about the release date for this game. However, Stephen Reid, the lead writer for the game has stated that the release of the release date would be preempted by some information. Could this be the start of the information train that leads to the release date? I think so, and so do many others. I am expecting a release date to be discussed in the next few weeks, or a month at the most. Perhaps we will even get some information from Comic-Con.
